Modern sea-going vessels are highly dynamically loaded, all-welded structures of individual design. Traditionally, fatigue aspects have been empirically taken into account by keeping overall stress levels within permissible limits and by limiting notch effects in the design of local structures. With an improving knowledge of fatigue loads and the rapid development of stress analysis calculation-based methods for a fatigue assessment of ship structures have been developed and introduced into the rules of Ship Classification Societies. Individual experimental and theoretical fatigue investigations are briefly described, which are directed towards an introduction of new cutting and welding processes, automation of the production and innovative use of various materials. Finally, an outlook is given to possible fields of future developments such as improved definition of load sequences, identification of fatigue-critical areas within a computer-based design process and user-friendly unified rules.
