The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) is transporting crude oil from Alaska's North Slope 1,288 km south to the Valdez Marine Terminal, the northernmost ice-free port in North America, since 1977. Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., owned by a consortium of seven oil companies with interests on Alaska's North Slope, is responsible for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the pipeline. A comprehensive Corrosion Control Management Plant (CCMP) was introduced by Alyeska to ensure that sound engineering practice is being used to determine the adequacy of cathodic protection (CP) on TAPS. Corrosion is a significant issue mainly on the 612 km of buried pipeline. The remaining 676 km of pipeline are located aboveground.
