Automotive Air Induction Filtration Systems (AAIFS) are designed to deliver superior performance levels for optimal engine protection. In addition, it must also meet packaging requirements, higher flow rates, serviceability, induction noise and lower system restriction. Ingested contaminant size and concentration levels need to be controlled to reduce engine wear. Major air filtration technologies, currently used on passenger cars, light/medium duty trucks and SUVs are presented along with performance and competitive data. Criteria for selecting engine Air Induction Filters (AIF) are discussed along with engineering and design parameters required for developing robust AAIFS. In recent years, there have been significant improvements in the design, development and use of AAIFS and engine AIF. Superior filtration performance is necessary for AAIFS to protect engines and in many instances electronics like mass air flow sensors (MAFS), ACT sensors etc. AIF have also evolved significantly from the use of coarse metal mesh and oil bath systems to sophisticated fibrous media for trapping and removing a variety of contaminants. A wide variety of filter media can be configured to design AIF with higher performance levels. Typical performance levels are dust (contaminant) capacities, mass efficiencies and filter element restriction. In addition, design of AAIFS also affects overall NVH (noise, vibration and harshness), flow management, emissions etc. This paper reviews three different filtration technologies used in AIF, dry paper media, treated paper media, and synthetic felt media. Discussions have been limited to passenger cars, light/medium duty trucks and SUVs.
