Currently, Kevlar fabric is used for bus upholstery. Cheaper Kynol fabric is attractive for this application, but it suffers from intrinsically inferior flame retardation compared to Kevlar. Novel polymer (organic/inorganic) blends were developed with greatly enhanced flame retardation. Actual bus seats were covered with the coated Kynol fabric. Covered bus seats were tested according to FMVSS-302 and the national burn test procedures. The effect of coating chemistry and the fabric properties on the flame retardation is reported.
