At the Detroit Motor-Show in January 1998, it was announced that the new X400 compact Jaguar would be produced at Ford's Halewood factory (near Liverpool) that had a reputation for militancy, resistance to change and poor workmanship. The deal to bring the X400 to Halewood was sweetened by a 43 Mio GBP governed aid package. The company's strategy carries Jaguar's ambitions to double sales from 100,000 to 200,000 annually. The first cars which roll off the production line in Februar 2001, will have four-wheel drive, and the power will come from the 3.0-litre V6 used in the S-Type and a 2.5-litre V6. The factory will guarantee jobs for the 3000 workforce for the next decade. The worldwide sales in 1998 was of over 50,000 cars, and by 2000 the turning out is expected to be 100,000 cars a year. Jaguar has sunk 900 Mio USD into the X400 project. The Boulevard Industrial Park (26 ha supply park provides Jaguar with bulk parts for the final trimming stages of production) is crucial for the proposed lean manufacturing plant.
