Melt-textured, bulk high-temperature superconductors (HTS) are finding increasing uses n superconducting bearings, flywheel energy storage, and other levitational applications. The article has focused almost exclusively on rotating HTS- bearings, but similar physics applies to linear HTS bearings. The stable levitational force suggests application in magnetically levitated conveyor systems in clean-room environments where high-purity requirements mandate no mechanical contact. Linear HTS bearings have also been proposed for microactuators. Some researchers have built small models of magnetically levitated vehicles in which the high-temperature superconductor is carried on board the vehicle and is levitated by a repulsive interaction with a magnetized track. On a larger scale, the use of trapped-field bulk high-temperature superconductors has been suggested as a flux source for an electromagnetic levitation system for high-speed maglev. Most of the levitation applications described in this article have used bulk high-temperature superconductors because they seem to be further advanced for purposes of levitation. However, HTS wires are also developing at a rapid rate, and the future may see their use in levitation applications, such as the substitution for LTS wires in maglev train transport or for magnetic suspension in wind tunnels.
