In this work a comprehensive numerical simulation model was improved and employed for assessing the survivability of damaged ro-ro vessels. The simulation model is capable of simulating the capsize situation of a damaged ship by taking account of vessel dynamics in realistic seaways as well as progressive flooding and water accumulation on the vehicle deck. Special emphasis was placed on simulating realistically the motion of water on deck. The simulation method was comprehensively validated by comparisons with model experiments (Chang and Blume, 1998, s. S. 2o8). A series of systematic parameter studies has been carried out using the simulation model with the view to identifying the more significant parameters influencing the survivability and stability of a damaged ro-ro ship in realistic seaways.
