The automotive industrie must deliver the right products to the marked both quickly and at reasonable cost. Substantial reductions in development time for new vehicles can only be achieved through the intensive use of computer-based simulation and development tools, from concept through to production. A very important factor for the marketing of a new vehicle is the interior noise quality. AVL, Graz (Austria) has developed a method for the objektive measurement of passenger car noise quality. The AVL Noise Quality Map is a software, and only a lap top computer and an artificial head is needed to work under different operation conditions. Examples of objektive descriptions for the noise quality under different operating conditions are loudness, low frequency content, sharpness, tonality, and roughness. Using ten different cars the results of the Software were correlated to the results of 317 persons. The results between road and laboratory evaloation were shown on the AVL-Scale form 1 (exellent) to 10 (very annoying). The correlaton factors were between 0,92 and 0,99. Furthermore five driver stereotypes and their needs are described.
