The Wuhan Zhongchuan Ship Engineering Development, China, has newly developed a rocket-type vortex-stern inland navigation ferry, featuring high speed, shallow draft, economic fuel consumption, good stability and low noise and vibration. The design highlights the technology of longitudinal flow wave suppression, which features smaller wave approach- and-exit angle, shorter streamline (water mainly flows longitudinally along the hull) and low resistance (low frictional resistance, low residual resistance, plus reduced spray resistance when the wavemaking height is restricted by bottom wave suppression). Especially when running at high speed, the residual resistance coefficient CR is much lower than that of the Nordstrom round bilge type and the Dutch U-type craft. Apparently, water surface beyond distances of two-time ship breadth and three-time sh ip length shows significant decrease in wave-making height, hence wave damage to smaller boats and wave washing of riversides is greatly reduced. Owing to the large mass of water carried along by the bottom at both bow and stern, pitching is effectively eliminated, bringing about a significant relief of the beating stress. The propulsive efficiency is raised by the vortex-stern technology. In general, the quasi-propulsive coefficient of speed craft is around 0.60, but that of the new ship is around 0.80, achieving a 30% energy-saving. It can be seen in experimental data that the hull efficiency lies in the range of 1.4 to 1.5, caused by a larger value of the quasi-propulsive coefficient (QPC) brought about by larger wake coefficient and smaller thrust reduction coefficient. The propeller has a larger diameter but is positioned above the baseline. The propeller shaft is wholly installed inside the hull, resulting in easy maintenance. Vibrations from the propellers is significantly reduced because of lighter average load on the blades and uniformity of incoming flow. Principal Particulars are given as follows: Length, o.a. 23.5 m; breadth, moulded 3.0 m; depth, moulded 1.2 m; draft 0.5 m; Speed 60 km/h; machinery output 2 x 205 kW; passenger 60 Persons. The hull form resembles that of the moon rocket, giving an impression of speed, simplicity and epoch-making. The top of the superstructure has an arched shell structure, featuring lightweight and solidity. The passenger compartment has no stanchions and, with large portholes on both sides, is bright and spacious as well as broad in field of vision.
