Recent deliveries and contracts of all sizes of cruise and passenger ships confirm French Chantiers de l'Atlantique's outstanding image among the world's largest builder of these impressive ships. In total, over 100 passenger ships have been built at this yard. In March 1999 Alstom, the yard's mother-company announced to have won an order to supply Greek Festival Cruises with two new ships, one of which is an option. The 625- cabin (1250 passengers) ships will be built at Saint Nazaire and are scheduled to enter service at the beginning of 2001 and 2002 respectively. The exterior design of the ships will be identical to that of the 'Mistral', ordered in 1997 and being finished in June this year. Main particulars of cruise ship 'Mistral' (47275 GT; 1200 passengers in 598 cabins) can be found in the special table. This ship generates it prime power in the diesel-electric way from 4 x Wärtsilä 12 V 38 (7920 kW each) engines and uses 2 x 9000 kW electric motors for propulsion via two fixed pitch propellers. But the newly contracted 2 to 3 vessels will be equipped with an innovative 'pod' propulsion system, adjustable over 360 deg, which combines maximum manoeuvrability and powerful propulsion with reduced noise and vibration levels. In March the order book of Alstom's Marine sector comprised twelve cruise ships (one of which is an option), two high-speed ferries, seventeen tugs and one seismic research vessel. For example, Chantiers de l'Atlantique received confirmation of an important order for two 1000-cabin cruise ships from Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCCL, today RCI). These 'Millenium'-class ships will be operated by Celebrity Cruises, a subsidiary of RCCL. At 85000 GT and 294 in length over all, they will be the largest cruise ships ever built in France. One of the most advanced features to be installed onboard of all six newbuildings will be a world first - a combined cycle power generating system, using both gas and steam turbines. Besides operating benefits and low NOx emissions, this up to now unique system will allow considerable weight and space gains (900 t and the equivalent of about 50 cabins respectively). Middle of March 1999 Chantiers de l'Atlantique has been awarded a contract by American Renaissance Cruises International for two further cruise ships. This latest contract for two 350-cabin cruise ships will complete the series of six sister-ships already ordered in 1996, 1997 and 1998 now to eight units within the same size. The first two vessels within this series are named 'R One' and 'R Two' being finished last year, while the delivery schedule for the remaining ships 'R Three to Eight' extends to the first half of 2001.
