The problem of analysing the audibility of a specified harmonic at rotational speed is a task frequently occurring in the automotive industry. A peak-to-background difference value relative to the level of the background noise which increases with the rotational speed is a suited measure. The calculation of a peak-to-background value is dependent on the used frequency band and on the energy values to be compared. The secure results equivalent to subjective perception, the frequency band is best chosen as a varying gammatone filter centred around the harmonic. Third-octave filters give different results at low frequencies. To compare the energy with and without the harmonic, loudness levels should be determined by calculating level differences only in e.g. a run-up analysis, where the background noise level increases by more than 20 dB, the result would be a changing audibility although an identical peak-to background difference is assumed.
