Marine Residual Fuels (MRFs) are the key energy resource for global shipping. They are cheap, easy to transport and handle, of high energy density and globally available. Their quality has been deteriorating during the last 20 years, in first line as a result of the refiners squeezing the barrel for more high value distillates. Specifications for MRFs have been developed and are now widely accepted as a user language helping engine nunufacturers, bunker suppliers and ship operators to define precisely, what they need. expect and receive. MRFs contain components like sulphur, asphaltenes, ashes and particles which make their treatment and application problematic. Ignition quality is often poor and exhaust gas composition generally desastrous. MRFs as delivered are not fit for use and must be treated on board. The treatment systems needed are sophisticated and request much competence for efficient operation. Exemplaric problem cases from the field demonstrate that fuel quality is crucial for safety at sea.
