Growing environmental and economic concerns have lead to recent efforts to produce more fuel efficient and lower emissions vehicles. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) are the most promising designs to reach these goals. In this paper, a special emphasis is made on the parallel architecture of HEVs. Different possible configurations are briefly presented. Then, after a short overview of different control strategies of the supervisor, a global optimal control determination procedure is explained. This procedure, known as Bellman procedure, optimizes the thermal-electric power demands and gear selections in order to reduce fuel consumption. The Bellman procedure is presented and illustrated on a double shaft architecture.
