Tailored blank welding of automotive parts like car doors is a very sensitive field in laser material processing due to highest quality demands. A main problem in laser welding of tailored blanks are small defects inside the weld seam, which are not visible with conventional methods. These defects can cause cracks during bending. An on-line plasma monitoring system called 'plasmo(R)' has been developed and installed in several production lines. The system is based on a two-colour photo diode and a high speed digital signal processor, where an adaptive algorithm is implemented. This setup gives an user-friendly and self learning system, which is able to detect defects like pores of about 100 microns on-line. Also lack of penetration or working outside the parameter window can be detected reliably.
