The castability performance and mechanical properties of magnesium and its alloys are adversely affected by the presence of inclusions, particularly MgO particles. In addition, the size of the largest inclusions may restrict the minimum thickness of certain metal products. Non-metallic inclusions may also reduce machinability, tool wear and cause deterioration of the surface quality. There is only limited information available regarding the cleanliness and microstructure of recycled commercial magnesium alloys. However this data is very important for the development of new recycling techniques and the evaluation of the possibility of producing recycled material with a similar quality to that of primary material. The paper aims to evaluate the quality of recycled commercial AZ91 magnesium alloy ingots including their chemical integrity, internal cleanliness, corrosion resistance and castability in order to develop a scientific approach to the introduction of recycled magnesium alloys into the transportation industry.
