Car positioning tests based on the use of inertial microsensors have been presented, outlining the influence of the number of sensors and of the aiding system. The use of inertial microsensors allows enhancing DGPS accuracy while providing information at higher frequency. The inertial system gives also information during GPS signals jam (urban canyon). Nowadays, the development of inertial microsensors has progressed rapidly, mainly driven by the automotive market. Nevertheless, cheap as well as highly accurate sensors still do not exist. In these test examples, the gyro is less noisy than the accelerometer but its resolution (0.4 deg/s) should still be improved four times in order to reach the navigation requirements (typ. 0.1 deg/s). Effort has still to be made to reduce the noise level as well as other errors. The sensor accuracy can be improved through design refinements but above all through suitable signal processing. For example, the sensor non-idealities can be modelled and taken into account while measuring. The presented experiments have also shown that the set of sensors used must be carefully chosen and influence strongly the system accuracy. The question of the limits of the use of inertial microsensors in automotive applications has to be answered considering not only the limits of the sensor itself but also the limits due to the configuration of the system as well as those of the signal processing.
