A new type of directional antenna, consisting of several antenna elements, a phase-synthesis circuit and switching system, was proposed to achieve an acceptable gain, fading reduction and the suppression of signal distortion for the FM broadcasting reception. The prototype has shown the excellent fading reduction but the gain of the antenna was not large enough. Here to achieve higher gain, the requirement for the elements is studied using a simple 2-D model, where two of the four elements have a different gain from the other two. The results are as follows: 1) The gain of the directional antenna was reduced remarkably by the unbalance of the gain of the antenna elements. For example, 3 dB unbalance lead to 2 dB gain loss. 2) The gain of the antenna had higher gain than the gain of the elements by 2 dB when they had the same gain. 3) The forward/backward gain ratio had a similar behavior to the gain. The ratio ranged from 14 to 7 dB as the unbalance changed from 0 to -9 dB. These results can be the criterion on the design for the elements.
