Thermal techniques for measuring flow are useful from the very low flow rates found in high vacuum systems to the large flows in natural gas lines. Two effects are commonly used: the absolute loss from a heated body, and the temperature rise of a stream passing over a heated body. With these resources, pickups can be made insensitive to fluctuations in incoming stream temperature and either omnidirectional or indicating both speed and direction of the stream.
