The aim of avionics companies is to give the pilot a constant reading of the performance of the many systems that today's military craft must carry, automatically detecting faults occuring while the plane is aloft. A survey of some of the approaches taken by avionics engineers indicates that onboard automatic checkout equipment may one day be routine.
