Failure of a major gas transmission pipeline can result in significant economic losses as well as severe safety hazards. There is therefore a desire to have safe, but also an optimal design of the structure. Design against crack initiation normally leads to conservative results for ductile materials, and this is usually the case for modern steels intended for pipelines. As a first approximation of the problem, quasilinear fracture mechanics and collapse calculations can be used for damage tolerance studies. These results may then be plotted in a FAD (Failure Analysis Diagram), e.g., according to CEGB (Central Electricity Generating Board), in order to account for elastic plastic effects. In a recently completed study of a Swedish X70 steel, it was shown that a large amount of stable crack growth occured before final rupture and that rupture through plastic collapse was the dominating failure mechanism.
