The paper describes a number of major strain measurement projects on offshore structures in the North Sea. The projects have involved installation of strain gauges and other sensors on underwater members of offshore structures and the recording and analysis of the strain time histories over several years. Examples of data and typical results are given. In particular, both the short term and the long term statistical characteristics of the strain signals are described; cycle counting methods and the estimation of fatigue damage from them are discussed. The measured results are compared with simple theory and with results of the design analysis of the structures.
