Hyperbaric unmanned MIG/MAG welding tests at pressures up to 30 bar (300 m water depth) were performed. The study focused on the effects of pressure, shielding gas, electrode and welding parameters on the weld metal chemistry, cooling time, microstructure, strength and especially toughness. In order to achieve good toughness at high pressure the conventional welding conditions have to be changed. These chnages include less active shielding gases, modified electrodes and welding with negative polarity at high pressure.
