Methanol as an automotive fuel for spark ignition engines has attracted much attention in recent years partly because of its relative cost and partly because of improved engine efficiency possibilities. There are, however, a number of technical problems that must be resolved, not least the need for hydrocarbon spiking agents to overcome cold starting diffuculties. Cold starting performance can be improved by engine design modifications as well as by adjustments to fuel composition, but a major key to the wider acceptance of methanol lies in the better understanding of the performance of priming agents. Whilst unleaded gasoline (ULG) appears to be favoured inproposed M100 fuel specifications, the paper will demonstrate that other refinery components offer even better performance, in particular, light straight run gasoline (SRG) with cut points up to 150 Cel. Anti-knock and hot fuel handling (HFH) tests have shown that such components do not have any serious detrimental effects on engine performance provided spiking agent concentration does not exceed 15 % vol. The paper will refer to work carried out on test vehicles and bed engines.
