A methanol engine, utilizing a glow plug ignition source, has been developed by Klockner Humboldt Deutz AG. Performance and emissions characteristics of a multi-cylinder version of this engine have been assessed for its potential use in underground mining operations. Oxidation catalysts are used to reduce emissions of gaseous hydrocarbons and CO. Test results show that particulate emissions can be reduced to about 2 mg/m3 over typical mining duty cycles. Results are compared to a diesel-fuelled counterpart. Aldehyde emissions and exhaust mutagenicity are also reported.
