Methanol is considered to be a potential long term substitute for conventional petroleum products in the transportation sector. It has advantages over other fuels in that it can be produced from a wide range of abundant feedstocks, and the fact that it is a liquid makes it relatively easy to distribute and store. However expectations that the current excess of methanol production capacity, based on natural gas, would lead to the use of fuel methanol have not been realised. Instead countries which have embarked on major oil substitution programmes have opted for synthetic liquid hydrocarbons or gaseous hydrocarbons. In order to evaluate alternative fuels, such as methanol, a Transport Fuels Supply and Utilisation Model has been developed. This includes a mathematical description of the entire transport fuels system, from oil importing and refining, and alternative and synthetic fuels production, through distribution of fuels, to different end-user technologies. It enables conventional petroleum products, synthetic fuels and alternative fuels to be evaluated within a single consistent framework and takes into account the different vehicle use patterns. This paper describes the interfuel competition, the trade-offs which lead to one fuel being preferred over others, and how these results might be applied to evaluating the potential markets for fuel methanol in the transportation sector.
