The Australian and New Zealand experiences with LPG and CNG as alternative transport fuels have been similar, particularly with respect to the problems encountered with implementation. These problems include technical, economic and institutional and have implications for other alternatives such as alcohol fuels. Market research has identified the relative importance of factors that influence the decision to use alternative fuels. It has also delineated the role and type of information sources that should be used to promote an alternative fuel. This paper presents this research and comments on what might be required if alcohol fuel implementation is not to face the same problems.
