Performance tests were conducted on a large prototype compression-ignition engine fitted with two injectors per cylinder, the first intended for the supply of a minimum pilot quantity of diesel oil, and the second for the main fuel, namely, methanol. The main fuels tested were methanol and ethanol, each in combination with the following pilot fuels: diesel oil, sunflower oil ethyl ester (SFE) and 'DIESANOL' fuel, a proprietary diesel replacement consisting of methanol with minor additions of ignition promoter, lubricity enhancer and corrosion inhibitor. Injection timing and duration were held unaltered for all fuel combinations. With each pilot fuel and over the entire range of operation, ethanol (having a volumetric calorific value 33 % higher than methanol) yielded torque and power 10 to 15 % higher than those for methanol. Thermal efficiencies were correspondingly lower on ethanol fuelling, and exhaust temperatures some 100 Cel higher. With both methanol and ethanol as main fuels, the performances of diesel oil and SFE as pilot fuels were essentially identicial and some 4 % higher than with standard 'DIESANOL' fuel. The contribution to the total fuel of each pilot fuel was approximately 5 % by volume.
