Engine wear and durability were evaluated for two methanol-fueled transit coaches. The coaches are operated with the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway, and Transportation District (GGTD) in a demonstration project sponsored by the California Energy Commission (GEC). One coach is a GM RTS-04 with a modified DDA 6V-92TA engine. The other coach is a M.A.N. SUe 240 with a D 2566 FMUH engine. Durability of engine components continues to be evaluated by monitoring the failure or deterioration of methanol-related components. Instances of wear or failure are photographically documented and assessments made to improve durability. Areas requiring more attention for the GM technology have included electronic unit injectors, glow plugs, electronic fuel control system, and fuel supply system. For the M.A.N. technology, the spark plugs, exhaust cataylst, injection pump, and fuel supply system are of primary interest. The component lifetimes are used to identify problem areas and assess improvement in newly developed components. Preliminary engine wear evaluations are compared to data for equivalent diesel engines. Analyses of the build-up of wear metals in engine oil provided indication of engine wear. Inspections of the engine also provided some indication of wear.
