Many research and development activities have been carried out on methanol-fueled engines. At the Japan Automobile Research Institute Inc. (JARI), three types of methanol engines have already been developed according to the types of vehicles which use such engines, i.e., the dissociated methanol gas spark ignition engine used for passenger cars, the diesel engine with a dual-fuel injection system which uses two fuels of methanol and diesel oil and has been applied to small-sized busses, and the spark-assisted methanol engine for medium-sized busses. Some of these methanol-fueled vehicles are being subjected to driving tests on public roads and others on test roads. Further efforts have been made at JARI based on the resuls of such engines to develop methanol-fueled engines with higher thermal efficiency and cleaner exhaust characteristics. It has been found through such efforts that an engine which uses two fuel systems of methanol directly injected in cylinders and dissociated methanol results in the same level of thermal efficiency as gas oil diesel engine, and a methanol engine of high practicality has been developed.
