In cold-start tests two turbo-charged direct-injection alcohol powered diesel engines based on different applications were evaluated. Alcohol with ignition improver was used on one of the engines and the other was equipped with two separate fuel systems using pure alcohol as the main fuel and diesel oil as the ignition fuel. Tests were made within the temperature range of +20 Cel to -30 Cel. During the start-up the engine speed, cylinder pressure, needle lift of the fuel injectors and tempratures of both intake air and exhaust gas were recorded. The startability of the alcohol/improver mixture powered engine was found superior to that of the dual-fuel engine. The mixture powered engine could be started until -15 Cel without any auxiliary devices and using intake air preheating both engines could be started at -30 Cel.
