The paper deals with the application of a high-speed, light weight, diesel engine to high speed traction service and some of the problems which have been experienced since its introduction into service. The principal of these was found to be allied to the high thermal cycling frequency experienced. Current duty of the British Rail High-Speed Train encompasses an average of 220000 miles and 50000, or more thermal cycles per annum. Faults experienced in service are described along with the work which led to their solution. Learning the lessons of the past, design features which require careful attention if reliability is to be achieved in future traction engines are highlighted and engineering approaches to these in the latest designs of engines for traction service are discussed.
