The automative heat exchanger manufacturers are continuously looking for new brazing sheet materials which would allow new designs with reduced gauge components. This paper deals with the examination of five experimental brazing sheet core alloy compositions, consisting of 3003 modified with a copper addition and four levels of titanium. Copper and titanium additions were found to result in substantial improvements in the corrosion resistance of the brazing sheet specimens in an accelerated laboratory test. The corrosion attack in the brazing sheet with titanium in the core compositions was observed to spread laterally, parallel to the surface. This mode of corrosion attack was considered primarily responsible for prolonging the time required for corrosion perforation. Laboratory brazing tests verified that each of the core compositions could be used to produce brazing sheet with brazeability similar to current production brazing sheet. It is expected that the addition of copper and titanium to current 3XXX brazing sheet core alloys can provide significant improvements in the external corrosion resistance of vacuum brazed aluminum automative heat exchanger assemblies.
