Aluminum's attractive combination of light weight, strength, ductility, corrosion resistance, ease of assembly and cost has made it the dominant material in the aircraft industry for a half century. This dominance is now being threatened by new materials such as titanium and plastic composites which offer potential weight savings with associated fuel economies. The aluminium industry is countering this threat by developing advanced technology materials of its own. These include rapidly solidified alloys, metal matrix composites and light weight aluminum-lithium alloys. Performance and cost considerations favor the latter, and a considerable effort is underway to commercialize Al-Li alloy products for wide-spread use in the aerospace industry.
