A study relating to the use of compressed natural gas in farm trucks and tractors has been initiated on farms in Saskatchewan. Technical and economic factors are being evaluated through a monitoring program that will provide factual information on the amount of liquid fuel that can be displaced by natural gas. Various types of dual-fuel conversion systems are being evaluated both on high-speed, turbocharged, diesel tractor engines and on gasoline truck engines. Critical issues such as farmer acceptance, fuel usage, engine durability, fuel storage, safety, and winter operation are discussed in the paper. Problems associated with reliability of small compressors, performance of dual-fuel conversion systems for diesel engines and providing adequate fuel storage on vehicles are being addressed.
