The purpose of this paper is to show the use of the shoe or pad factor in designing both disk and drum brakes. The analytical expressions of the said factor, as obtained from the theoretical considerations of Romiti, are given and the influence on the factor of some geometrical parameters is shown. A dimensionless ratio dependent on the pressure is introduced as a design parameter and its analytical expression as a function of the shoe factor is given. The solution for disk brakes is approximated due to the complexity of the analytical formulation. Disk brakes and drum brakes are compared with regard to the influence of variations of the coefficient of friction.
