The paper discusses the design options available for the production of a commercial vehicle regenerative braking driveline. It is based on the experience gained during the joint development programme for the Leyland/BP regenerative bus, and, as such, concentrates on mechanical systems using a high-speed flywheel as the energy storage medium. It covers the operational specifications for each of the driveline components and outlines the strategy adopted for their integration into the final system. The operational characteristics of the bus are described, including the mechanically automated 'link' transmission that engages the engine and flywheel.
