The design of a Stirling engine for model aircraft propulsion is described. This application requires an unusual form factor, not easily met by any of the usual engine layouts. The configuration chosen is a single cylinder Beta with a scotch yoke drive.Bevel gears drive the output shaft, coupled to the propeller, with a 1:2 speed increase. The output shaft is colinear with the axis of the cylinder. A 4:1 bore to storke ratio keeps the scotch yoke drive small, the engine short and the annular heat exchangers large in area. Current work is being done with propane fuel but butane might be preferable for flight. A high power to weight ratio is of primary importance (300-400 watts/Kg). A prototype engine was built and demonstrated at the 20th IECEC, and is currently under test. This engine proves the viability of the basic design, particularly that of the scotch yoke drive. A detailed physical description is given here, as well as some test results. Some conclusions are drawn concerning the direction of future work.
