This paper discusses the concepts and feasibility of using active attenuators for the control of low frequency vehicle exhaust noise. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of a fast adaption system which can rapidly adjust to the changing sound field generated at the exhaust outlet. The paper illustrates the degree of noise reduction achieved using a prototype active attenuator fitted to a large (320 hp) diesel engine both on the test bed and when fitted to an operating vehicle.
