A new GC-FID system has been developed to measure unburned methanol emission from a vehicle fueled by pure or gasoline blended methanol. The system which utilizes two chromatographic columns, has an analytical time of 2 minutes and a minimum measurement range of 0-10 ppm. To determine the accuracy of the system, known quantities of methanol were injected into a CVS and the mass value of the recovered methanol calculated. It was found that methanol is dissolved in water which condenses in the sample transport line. Using a heated line recovery ratios of 0.95-1.00 were obtained. The system is currently being modified to measure aldehyde emissions.
