The average private motor vehicle has its braking ratio arranged so that the front wheels lock before the rears for all surface conditions, and related vehicle decelerations, taking account of the dynamic weight transfer from the rear to the front wheels. For normal driving conditions this front bias is sufficient to provide a stable stop and avoids the possibility of a sideways skid due to a premature rear wheel lock. For the experienced driver, therefore, the shortest stop can be achieved by pressing the brake pedal just hard enough to prevent locking of the front wheels, but this impending lock is not easily sensed by the average driver. Also, if the road surface friction level varies during the stop, it is even more difficult to sense an impending skid and prevent loss of steering, especially under emergency conditions. The object of this paper is to show that it is possible to fit a simple anti-lock device to the front wheels of a front wheel drive car, to permit the average driver to steer the car, no matter how hard the brake pedal is pressed, although warning will be given by a slight pedal pulsation, that the optimum front adhesion level has been attained. Also by connecting a front to its diagonally opposite rear, via an improved apportioning valve, it is possible to provide directional stability and achieve a creditable stopping distance.
