This paper discusses different approches for improving the turbo lag of passenger car turbochargers. Methods of improving turbo lag have traditionally been researched from the standpoint of reducing the moment of inertia of the rotating parts. The results of this study confirm that a variable geometry turbine and reduction of bearing friction losses are effective in reduction of turbo lag. It was found that the adoption of rolling bearings significantly reduced bearing friction losses. The combination of rolling bearings and a variable geometry turbine has resulted in a substantial reduction of turbo lag.
