Modifications to turbochargers, focussed upon the improvement of the specific fuel consumption of small turbocharged diesel engines with controlled boost pressure. Utilizing the exhaust gas energy coming from the waste gate in an ejector and optimizing the silencer system positively influence the boundary conditions for the operation of the turbine. The development of turbocharger characteristics which are matched to engine requirements and the reduction of the bearing friction represent further improvements. As far as the controlling of the boost pressure is concerned, initial investigations on a variable turbine geometry are discussed herein.
