Replacement of a 2 litre normally aspirated engine by a 1.3 litre turbocharged engine is shown to give fuel savings of greater than 12 %. However the prototype lean-burn turbocharged engine has of necessity been compared with production cars. Driveability of the turbocharged engine as measured by transient response in acceleration manoeuvres from rest and when overtaking is equal to that of the equal torque/power normally aspirated engines. Although a computer design package was used to optimise the turbocharged engine for low speed torque, torque deficiency exists at very low engine speeds. The prototype engine meets emissions standards requiring a catalytic converter and lead free fuel.
