The decisive influence of the level of automation on capital expenditure and thus both on profitability and the layout concept is discussed. In many cases it is advisable to start with a medium level of automation and to increase this at a later stage if necessary. However, a detailed analysis of alternatives shows that the output has just as great an influence as the level of automation. It is demonstrated that the efffectiveness can nevertheless be additionally improved by increasing the degree of flexibility. To ensure the successful implementation of a project, it is essential that the recommendations made in this paper should be followed and that the system planner be allowed sufficient time to investigate alternatives. Due consideration must also be given to the fact that system availability is at greater risk in the case of high levels of automation.
