PTFE is added to lubricating greases and automotive crankcase oils to form a colloidal dispersion. Chemical and tribological (wear) testing that has contributed to the development of PTFE-containing lubricants - which have reduced energy consumption in automobile engines - is explained, with discussions of experimental procedures and results. These laboratory test methods include the four-ball apparatus, the scanning electron microscope (SEM), electrical resistivity measurements, and an abrasion test for assessing the friction and wear characteristics of PTFE-containing lubricant materials. This paper also covers actual performance experience with PTFE-containing lubricants.
