A design and development study was carried out to create a direct-connected fan cooling system for a bidirectional, high-speed, railway traction motor which would generate a minimal level of sound pressure near the railway car. The fan design was additionally constrained to fit within a very close space allowance, and was required to provide equal amounts of cooling air flow in either rotational direction. Extrapolation of existing design practice indicated an unacceptably high averaged noise level in the range of 110 dBA (SPL), with a maximum level occurring at 45 to 60 degrees from the fan axis, at a specified at 45 to 60 degrees from the fan axis, at a specified distance of 4.6 m. A design concept intended to overcome this limitations was centered on the use of an optimized radially bladed impeller with minimum tip speed installed in a flow path capable of significnat levels of vaneless diffusion of the swirl component of discharge velocity. Development and testing of the fan cooling system resulted in a configuration which provides conservative motor cooling while generating averaged noise levels of about 94 dBA (SPL) at the same distance - a reduction over the conventional design of about 15 dBA.
