Prolonged exposure to terrain-induced whole-body vibration may cause health risks to operators of off-road vehicles. Previous work on active seat suspension systems for off-road vehicles has demonstrated their potential to effectively isolate the operator from low frequency vibrations. Actuation of the suspension system can be either electromechanical or hydraulic and both have been used. Hydraulic actuation is attractive because of the speed of response and the availability of an on-board power supply. This paper describes the development of an active hydraulic suspension system in which a microprocessor is used to replace the analog components previously used for signal processing as well as implementing the control functions. The algorithms developed, as well as laboratory shaker stand tests results on the overall system, are presented.
