Propeller blade damage resulting from an impact on the blade by some foreign object is called foreign object damage or FOD. In propeller powered aircraft such FOD is given serious consideration for reasons of flight safety. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all proposed propeller blade designs to meet impact damage criteria before the propellers are certified for civil aviation use. This paper describes the results of a program conducted by the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) under contract to TRW Hartzell to investigate the impact response of a composite propeller blade to bird impacts. The objective of the program was to demonstrate that the particular propeller designed for the M10877 Beech Aircraft Model 1900 would pass the FAA certification requirements.
