The estimation of spectra using the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) is gaining widespread acceptance in such diverse fields as geophysics and astronomy. The Maximum Entropy Method provides a better resolution from shorter record lengths than the traditional FFT and window techniques and also eliminates leakage. Frequency Response Functions (FRF's estimated from MEM spectra are rational functions in the Z-transform domain. This functional form corresponds to the time domain differential equation for a lumped parameter dynamic mechanical system. These FRF's will also be causal and minimum phase, so that for curvefitting purposes, the analyst is working with essential analytical data. The paper will start with a brief description of the theoretical background, and then present a detailed practical example of an automotive structure with comparisons between the MEM and FFT techniques.
