A joint project involving NASA and Rockwell's Rocketdyne Division is underway to develop and implement an advanced, sensory-based robotic TIG welding system. The completed system will be used to weld various components of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). Work has begun at the NASA Marhsall Space Flight Center with a Cryo 750 rectilinear arm mated with an Ohio State University vision system. At Rocketdyne, the penetration sensor and offline programming are being developed and an articulated robot system is ordered. All adaptive subsystems will be incorporated into the development robot and then retrofitted to robots on the manufacturing floor.
